Look at the sticker on the bottom of your router. It must explicitly state N301 and V6 (or Version 6.0). Installing firmware meant for V1, V2, or V5 on a V6 device will permanently damage the hardware.
Wait for router to reboot fully; do not power-cycle during upgrade.
