Kazama was born on February 2, 1979, in Tokyo, Japan. She began her career in the adult industry, entering the world of strip tease before making her AV debut in October 1997 at the age of 18 under the alias "Chika Suzukawa". She quickly switched to her now-famous stage name, Yumi Kazama, in May of the following year and began exploring more intense genres like SM (sado-masochism).
