You have to start here. When I popped the 1991 debut, Gish , into the player, I wasn't prepared for how heavy it was. Before the band became MTV icons, they were a tight, heavy alternative machine.
Formed in Chicago in 1988, the band was built on the creative tension between its members: vocalist/guitarist Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. This lineup created a sound that was dense, layered, and far removed from the straightforward punk rock of their peers, drawing from influences like heavy metal, dream pop, and psychedelic rock.
While often lumped into the emerging grunge movement, Gish was distinctly different. It leaned heavily into 1970s psychedelia, heavy metal riffs, and dream pop texturing. Corgan’s meticulous recording style was already on display here; he reportedly played most of the guitar and bass parts himself to achieve absolute precision. "Siva", "Rhinoceros", "I Am One"
